Aggregates or granules are the most commonly used products in the construction industry; they are used with concrete, bituminous conglomerates, gypsum, (railway) road sub-bases, etc. The various International Standards and the new European Standards (EN) require different controls for different characteristics: mechanical, physical and geometric properties, density, strength, crumbling, etc. A rock layer will undergo changes in mechanical properties when exposed to excavations, treatments, etc. The above factors make a study of the mechanical properties of an undamaged, intact stone necessary to analyse the related properties. This will avoid problems in the construction of underground or surface structures such as galleries, quarries, mines and foundations.
